2. Expectations
The expectations that we have for all students can be summed up in the Air Force Core Values:
“Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence in All We Do”
During the first days of class we’ll discuss how these statements are relevant to your success. Students will sign a Student Contract and Classroom Procedures document. You’ll be expected to abide by these procedures and the guidelines of the Garden City School District. In addition, we firmly believe that most high school students are mature enough to know which behavior is appropriate and respectful. If students choose to participate in disrespectful or inappropriate activities, progressive actions will be taken as specified in the appropriate discipline plan.
3. Classroom Procedures
In addition to the standard classroom rules for GCHS students, all AFJROTC cadets have additional classroom procedures they are expected to follow. (See the Cadet Handbook for reference)
Come to the AFJROTC classroom prepared to participate. Bring a pen or pencil and paper!
Class attendance and dismissal will be administered in accordance with the AFJROTC classroom procedures.
Raise your hand when you have a question, relevant comment or concern.
4. Grading Policies
Attendance/Absences/Tardiness:
The GCHS Attendance Policy is firmly followed by our unit. You’re reminded that it is your responsibility for making up any missed assignments upon your first day of return. If you’re absent for an extended period of time, please contact the appropriate school administrator so we can forward your assignments to you when possible.
Evaluation:
Your grades will be calculated based upon a general point system. Cadets are able to earn points through a variety of activities that may include but not limited to: assessments, class work/homework, projects (individual and group), parades, major events, wellness program participation and wear of the uniform.
Weighed Factors: Academic – 40% (assessments, papers, oral presentation, class work, homework)
Leadership – 40% (co-curricular activities, uniform wear, drill)
Wellness – 20% (participation, effort, improvement)
Final Exam – 10%
Grades: A = 92% A- = 90% B+ = 88 B = 82% B- = 80% C+= 78% C = 72% C- = 70% D+ = 68% D = 62% D- = 60 % E = 59 - 0%
Note: Successful completion of AFJROTC = 70% or higher
Class Participation:
AFJROTC is designed to develop citizens of character with leadership skills; oral discussion is a critical part of the process. Therefore, asking and answering questions and actively participating in class discussions are an essential part of participation in class which will contribute toward your overall grade.
Outside of Class Participation:
Because a part of the AFJROTC’s mission is to serve the community you reside in, all cadets will be required to participate in activities outside of the regular class schedule. Participation in a minimum of 2 activities is required each semester.
Homework/Assignments:
Late homework/class assignments will lose points each day they are late. If the cadet is lawfully absent on the due date, the assignment is due the first day back to school. When an assignment is not turned in on the due date, 10% per day (up to a maximum of four academic days) will be deducted from the grade. After the fourth academic day the cadet will receive a zero for the missed assignment.
Esprit de Corps Day:
Esprit de Corps Day is every Wednesday. On this day, all cadets must wear the Air Force uniform during school hours. First year cadets will have the option of an alternative uniform which will consist of a polo shirt with the MI-861 (purchased at cost), Khaki (tan) pants and belt. Polo uniform must be properly worn the entire school day with shirt tucked in all day. ALL CADETS MUST meet standard grooming standards. Failure to wear the uniform properly or being caught not wearing it all day will result in a 50 point deduction. If caught more than once you will receive a ZERO for that day. If marked down 3 times for the same uniform violation (example hair, shave, colored nails, etc.) you will receive a zero on the 3rd offense. Cadets must wear the uniform each class; failure to wear the uniform 3 times or receiving 3 zeros will result in an “E” in the course and removal from the AFJROTC program. If you cannot wear your uniform, due to a bona fide reason verified by your parent or guardian and reviewed by the SASI or ASI, coordinate with the Flight Commander before Esprit de Corps Day. If you are absent you must wear the uniform on the next day you return to school. Any unexcused absences on uniform day will result in a zero for the day.
Cadets do have the option at any time during the first year to choose to switch to the standard AFJROTC uniform. Once a cadet has been issued a uniform this is the uniform required for all future inspections and Esprit de Corps days.
Physical Training Day:
Physical Training Day is every Friday. On this day, all cadets must bring and wear their PT uniform to change into during their class period. To get full points (100) the wear of the entire physical training (PT). uniform is required plus best effort during the physical training event. This includes the MI-861 shorts and T-Shirt that were provided at no cost and appropriate athletic shoes. The PT shirt will be tucked into the shorts and provide a neat appearance. Leggings may be worn under the shorts and loose sweatpants may be worn over the shorts as long as the shorts are worn. Shorts will not be allowed over jeans or other pants not previously noted. In colder weather sweatshirts or hoodies may be worn over the PT shirt with the shirt tucked into the shorts. Under no circumstances are shoes or boots that are not athletic wear allowed for Physical Training purposes. Failure to wear the PT uniform during their class period will result in a loss of 50 points that week. Cadets who are present in class on Fridays and unable to participate in PT due to a medical condition will write a single spaced typed paper on a fitness topic. SASI/ASI will determine the topic.
