MI-861 Unit Mission
To inspire, encourage, educate, and change lives.
MI-861 was established at Garden City East High School in 1986. Since then, we have been providing a unique and invaluable experience to over 36 generations of cadets. We strive to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community. Our program has shaped the lives of many of our students in countless ways. We provide them with an opportunity to learn leadership skills, build self-confidence, and gain a sense of responsibility. Our instructors are dedicated to helping each cadet reach their full potential. We also provide mentorship and guidance on academic success, college preparation, career exploration, and more. In addition to the educational benefits that our program provides, we also create a strong sense of camaraderie among our cadets. Through team-building activities such as drill competitions and field trips, they form lasting friendships with one another that extend beyond the classroom walls. At MI-861 we believe in developing well-rounded individuals who are prepared for life after high school graduation. Our goal is to help each cadet become successful in whatever path they choose by instilling values such as integrity, respect for others, discipline, and patriotism into their daily lives.

What is Espirit de Corps?
Espirit de Corps, or as our cadets might call it, "Uniform Day," occurs every Wednesday. Cadets are required to either wear the Air Force Blues, Air Force Battle Uniform, Operational Camouflage Pattern, or for new cadets even just a polo shirt with khakis. Cadets are then graded based on their overall appearance and demeanor. Espirit de Corps makes up 40% of a cadets grade in JROTC, and is a breeze for a dedicated cadet willing to put in the work.
